Well known as an effective natural stimulant beneficial for the mind and body when needed, Guarana (pronounced gwa-ra-naa) is a creeping shrub that grows in the Amazon which produces clusters of small red berry fruit containing black seeds. As the fruit ripens it splits open revealingthe black seed,giving it the appearance of an ‘eye’. The name 'Guarana' comes from the Guarani tribe that lives in Brazil. The main ingredient of Guarana is guaranine, which has the same characteristics as caffeine. This is the reason for the energy boost people get after taking Guarana.
 
 
Guarana-based products are getting more and more popular all over the world. Guarana-based drinks are very popular in Brazil, the distinctive and unique taste of Guarana being the main reason for its success as a soft drink (Guarana Antartica),and also because Guaraná is considered to be a health tonic. Guarana has been studied for decades by scientists around the world. Studies began in 1940 by the French and Germans, and indicated that Guarana improved the memory, mood and alertness. Believed to be a health tonic in Brazil, it is used to increase stamina and physical endurance, to increase mental awareness and concentration, to overcome heat fatigue, as an aphrodisiac, to help combat premature aging and to detoxify the blood. In addition to being used for centuries by indigenous tribes for its energising properties, Guarana has also been used to treat a variety of other ailments such as chronic diarrhoea, cramps, heart problems, fevers and headaches. Guarana is also a popular ingredient in herbal weight loss pills as evidence indicates that it may increase fat-burning and suppress the appetite.
 
Guarana seeds contain up to 4 – 8% caffeine and are rich in tannins, xanthine alkaloids and theobromine. Combined, the properties give Guarana its smooth, steady, long-lasting stimulation. Due to its high caffeine content, Guarana should be avoided by pregnant or nursing women, those suffering from heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes, and those who are sensitive to caffeine or xanthines.
   
 
 
 
When dry, the seeds are dried and ground. After its powder is mixed with a little water, it is rolled into thick sticks (Bastão). The Bastão is grated with the rough, dried tongue of the Pirarucu fish to produce a fine Guarana powder to use on food or in drinks. We recommend using a nutmeg grater if you have difficulty locating this large Amazonian fish!!
